introduction

Datastores in VMware vSphere are storage containers for files. They could be located on a local server hard drive or across the network on a [ SAN ISCSI. NAS ]

Datastores hide the specifics of each storage device and provide a uniform model for storing virtual machine files.

Datastores are used to hold virtual machine files, templates, and ISO images. They can be formatted with VMFS (Virtual Machine File System, a clustered file system from VMware), or with a file system native to the storage provider (in the case of a NAS/NFS device).

To display datastore information using the vSphere Web Client, go to vCenter > Datastores:

ESXI datastore

ESXI Storage Network Diagram

ESXI network diagram

let us to look to network diagram above

ESXI151 currently have 2 HDD

first one : HDD01 just for operating system

normally operating system installed on flash to save storage , if server support

second HDD : 400 GB , but NOT configured yet , which will be et a local data store

Server ESXI151 alo conn connect to ISCSI storage to utilize remote storage : which will be discussed in advanced article

create local data store

in this article : we will see how to create local datastore

later when deep diving into vShpere : we will also discuss how to connect to remote storage either ASN , NAS , ISCSI in different article for each

also we  have totally separate course about vSAN storage

we have only one datastore for OS : selct new datastore
follow wizard
insert datastore name
format as VMFS6
review and finish
accept warning to format datastore
rename first datastore
now we have two datastore

conclusion

in this article we have got overview about ESXI storage

and how to create local Data Store

this article was necessary just to create datastore , which will be used in next article to create Virtual Machine
